Coed-y-LLyn

By on

Thursday 24th September  Very heavy rain  in the night. Left Ty Cerrig  for next site. Hail and sleet ! Arrived at C&C site Coed-y-Llyn very well organised and helpful wardens. Weather cleared late afternoon so went for short ride in car to  a Roman Site at Tomen y Mur. Walked around the  remains of a fort,  an amphitheater, roman road and wall. Very desolate area but with nice views chatted to local farmer and his sheepdog Scott.

Next day we set off early for a tour of the Lynn  Peninsular passing by the Ffestiniog railway and through Portmadoc. Then on to Cricieth with its castle perched high on the cliffs overlooking the beach. Carried on to Pwitheli drove to beach but too windy to walk, so carried on to Abersoch a good sailing centre. We stopped in the little village of Leanysturnduvy the boyhood home of David Lloyd George to see  the memorial museum but all closed. We did visit his grave a lovely spot on overlooking a river. Then on to Abersoch a pretty village on the coast where we found a sheltered spot to have our picnic lunch. Our next stop was the very windy headland overlooking Bardsey Island we walked to the point but had difficulty in staying upright! By this time we were all toured out so made our way back to campsite.

Our final day was perhaps our most challenging!  We decided to do the Trawsfynydd cycle trail a 9 mile mountain bike route around the reservoir. We cycled from the campsite to do the circuit but it was a very tough ride for us on our small  folding bikes the track being narrow stony and steep at times. The lake itself is very scenic and very popular for fisherman. At the head of the lake is a decommissioned nuclear power station, a large visitor centre (closed) and very nice cafe overlooking the lake, and an interesting 3/4 mile long wooden footbridge right across  which we wheeled across and found a sunny spot for our lunch. On the return we stopped in the small village of Trawsfnydd to see the statue of Hedd Wyn a famous welsh bard who was born there. We came back along the road to the campsite!   Click on images to enlarge
