Monemvasia

By on

Today our group went on a coach trip to Monemvasia a fortified town built on two levels on a rock rearing 350m (1,150)ft above the sea. Monemvasia’s nickname I’d The Gibraltar of Greece. Though the upper town is in ruins most of the lower town is restored. We walked up the steep winding stony steps to the top. Standing at the summit was the beautiful Agia Sofia 13th century Church, the only intact remmant of the Upper town. The flower filled climb took us up past interesting fortifications and lookout points with splendid views over the lower town and coast. After this strenuous walk we met up with our group for a lovely seafood lunch in a terraced restaurant overlooking the blue Aegean Sea. The starters were octopus chunks, baby octupus,  prawns and calamari a new experience for us! The main was salad with a huge piece of delicious grilled fish, not sure what it was, and a orange soaked sponge for desert. A very good day. Hope you like the photos.
