Garsdale Yorkshire Dales

By on

Another Farm CL now in Yorkshire. Dull weather did not deter us today as we set off for the days drive. From Hawes we headed up Through High Shaw The Great Shunner Fell rising  up to our left, to Buttertubs Pass a Hill that was used in early days of the Edinburgh Trial. The scenery is quite different to Wales and the Lakes being much softer with wide open moorlands, rounded Fells and deep wide Dales. On to  pretty Thwaite  and Keld where we made a very steep climb with severe hairpins up West Stonesdale before arriving at Tan Hill the highest pub in Britain at 1,733ft on the Pennine Way Route. Busy with cars walkers cyclists and bikers. We stopped for lunch in Kirkby Stephens before heading up to Birkdale Fell a single track road popular with cyclists and bikers. Leaving Swaledale our next challenge was Oxnop Scar a very severe start then a steady long climb dipping and switching left to right it was a rollercoaster drive! After pausing at the summit it was a steep descent to Askrigg before heading back to camp.
