Corfu Island Tour

By on

Our coach arrived at 9 to take us on a tour of Corfu. We first went south to visit the Achilleion Palace once home to the Empress Elisabeth. Elisabeth was a great admirer of the Greek hero Achilles from Greek Mythology and the statues and sculptures that adorn the terraces and gardens reflect this. Inside there is a magnificent staircase and ceiling mural and a grand oil painting depicting the Triumph of Achilles as well as many historical artifacts and photos  Then it was time to move on to Mon Repose the birthplace of the Duke of Edinburgh now sadly in disrepair. The terrace was used for filming episodes in TV Durrells. After a short tour of Corfu Town we next visited a Kumquat Distillery. Corfu is famous for growing the small orange fruit. Then a lunch stop at a small beach resort before heading up inland to Belle Vue at1200ft for a panoramic view of Corfu. The N back to camp after a long but very interesting day.
