Camping Kato Alissos Greece

By on

Tuesday 23 yesterday we arrived at this delightful family run rural campsite. Set Amongst orange lemon and olive trees one of which is over 1,000 years old with a restaurant overlooking the sea. In the evening our group enjoyed an excellent typical Greek meal.

Our scheduled mountain train journey today had to be cancelled due to a rock fall onto the track so we made the journey by coach. This was interesting as we drove higher and higher on an unbarrierd road with steep hairpin bends and sweeping views down into deep valleys. We stopped for coffee at the Agia-Lavra Monastery built into the side of the Chelmos mountain and rebuilt in 2003 after it was burnt down by the German Army in 1943. After visiting this beautiful place we carried on upwards towards the mountain village of Kalavrita. Here our group enjoyed another lovely Greek meal and time to look around the villageĀ  This is a place with a very sad history. The atrocities during the war which were carried out here I cannot describe. I have taken photos which give some of the story. Then back on our coach to our campsite stopping of for a quick photo at the Rio Bridge linking the Peloponnese to Northern Greece. It’s one of the world’s longest multispan bridges.
